Who's Who in the Jewish Bible: Abigail
Abigail (Hebrew origin: Father of joy)
(1 Samuel 25:3) 11th century b.c.e.
Abigail, a beautiful and intelligent woman, married David after the death of Nabal, her first husband. At that time, David was the leader of a band of outcasts. Hearing that Nabal was sheering his sheep, he sent ten men to ask for a contribution. Nabal treated the men rudely and refused to give them anything. Abigail realized that David would come to punish Nabal for his insulting behavior. She loaded several asses with food and wine and, without telling her husband, went to intercept David. Abigail met David and his men on the way. She apologized to David for her husband's bad manners and convinced him not to take revenge on Nabal. Abigail returned home and found Nabal drunk. She waited until the next morning to tell him what she had done. Upon hearing of his close escape,
Nabal suffered a stroke and died ten days later. When David learned that Nabal had died,
he asked Abigail to marry him, and she agreed.
