Who's Who in the Jewish Bible: Dinah

Dinah (Hebrew origin: Judgment)
(Genesis 30:21). 17th century b.c.e.

Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, was the full sister of Zebulun, Issachar, Reuben, Levi, Judah, and Simeon, and the half-sister of Gad, Asher, Dan, Naphtali, Benjamin and Joseph. Shechem, the son of the ruler of the city of Shechem, saw Dinah one day and raped her. He then fell in love with her and asked his father Hamor to speak to Jacob on his behalf and ask for Dinah's hand. The sons of Jacob took charge of the negotiations and deceitfully agreed to Hamor's request on condition that Hamor, Shechem, and all the men in the city be circumcised. Hamor and his son agreed to this condition; and they, together with all the men in the city, were circumcised. Simeon and Levi took advantage of the weakened condition of the circumcised men to revenge their sister's lost honor. They slaughtered all the men in the city of Shechem, including Hamor and Shechem; took their sheep, oxen, and other possessions; and brought Dinah back home.
