Jewish Publication Society Wins Two National Jewish Book Award Honors

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – In the midst of celebrating its 120th year as the world’s only non-profit, multi-denominational publisher of Jewish books written in English, the Jewish Publication Society just received other celebratory news: two of its 2008 titles have been selected as National Jewish Book Award Finalists.

From Krakow to Krypton: Jews and Comic Books by Arie Kaplan was named a 2008 National Jewish Book Award Finalist in the category of American Jewish Studies. Kaplan chronicles the colorful history of the comic book industry, which was created and largely developed by Jewish artists and writers whose stories reveal the strong influences of a Jewish perspective on their individual work and the comics industry as a whole.

Checkpoints by Marilyn Levy was designated a 2008 National Jewish Book Award Finalist in the category of Children’s and Young Adult Literature. Levy explores the realities teenagers in the Middle East face today through the story of two girls – an Israeli Jew and a Palestinian Muslim – whose friendship is tested by a tragic incident.

The National Jewish Book Awards program began in 1948. It is the longest running North American awards program of its kind in the field of Jewish literature and is recognized as the most prestigious.
