Make a Bread Dough Map of Israel (NOT for eating!)
 |
This craft project calls for the use of scissors. Before beginning, get
either help or the "go-ahead" from a responsible adult.
|
To make the bread dough you will need:
- ½ cup of hot (not boiling) water
- ½ cup of salt
- 1 1/3 cups of flour
- measuring cup
- bowl
- spoon for mixing
Directions:
- Add the salt to the hot water in the bowl. Stir well.
- Add the flour. Mix well. Knead the mixture until the dough is smooth. If the
mixture is too sticky to knead, add a tablespoon of flour
To make the map you will need:
- Sheet of baking parchment about 3½ inches by 10 inches
- Cookie sheet larger than 3½ inches by 10 inches
- Cardboard or other board larger than 3½ inches by 10 inches
- Tape
- Glue
- Acrylic or watercolor paint and brush
- Toothpicks
- Paper for names
Directions:
- PRINT AND TRACE the map outline
onto the baking parchment.
- Place the baking parchment on the cookie sheet. Tape it at corners
to hold it flat.
Press half of the bread dough inside the outline. Add bits of dough to
build mountains. Dig away dough for the lakes and seas. You can use a
pencil tip to shape mountains and seas.
- Make a hole with the toothpick, at Haifa, Tel Aviv, Beersheba,
and Jerusalem. Make a hole in the center for the flag of Israel.
- Remove the tape. Bake in the oven at 250 degrees for one to two
hours until the bread dough map is hard and dry.
- When the map is cool, peel off the baking parchment, spread glue
on the underside of the bread dough map, and glue it to the board.
Paint blue for the water, green for valleys, brown for the mountains... or
whatever you choose. It's your map!
- Write the city names and "Israel" on small pieces of paper. Glue
them to the toothpicks and glue the toothpicks into the holes you made
in #4.
Note: This map is a simplified outline. With peace agreements, the
outline of the State of Israel changes.
